Church folks can have a nasty little habit about them. They often want all the new folks who come to Christ to quickly become just like them. What I mean is that they can (overtly or covertly) require everyone to wear the right clothes, talk the right way, and pray the right way, etc. And it can get worse! Some churches want new Christians (or even pre-Christians) to believe there is more to the salvation process than giving your life to Christ and accepting His redemption. Make no mistake about it, when people do this, they are veering from the Word or God. Whatever is required by Scripture should be done (baptism for example), but anything added to the process doesn't add to your salvation--it is simply a public witness to what's already happened inside one's soul. We need to remember that this type of stuff has been going on for a loooooong time. The early Gentile Christians (non-Jews who accepted Christ) were made to believe they had to do everything the Jews had done under the law. Just like churches who burden folks today, they were totally incorrect.
"Some men came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the brothers: 'Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moss, you cannot be saved.' This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question... After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them:... 'Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear? No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are... It is my judgement, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood.'" Acts 15:1-20
