During the course of a day, my mind is crowded by about a thousand things I need to get done, another hundred or so about my kids and what they're up to, and who knows what else! Life is so busy these days, and it doesn't seem to be getting better. Even as a full-time minister, I spend more of my time taking care of details than I do ministering. You'd think I wouldn't have a problem carving out time to spend with Jesus, but I do. I don't miss a day with Him mind you, but I wonder if I always give Him the quality time I should. My point here is that learning to spend time with the Lord and to think about Him and talk to Him continuously will never be easy as long as Satan is around. Also, it is a learned ability. I guess it's kind of like learning to save 25% of your take-home pay. It's a whole lot easier if you learned it when you were young and have practiced it for years. Similarly, fixing your mind on things above can take some effort and practice definitely helps things along. Remember though, those things that crowd in and fill the day, they only get worse. Decide now to give the best part of your day to the Lord, and then spend the rest of it talking with Him about whatever else comes up. I think you'll find many of the less important things taking a back seat to what's really important. Practice won't make perfect, but it sure will help!
"Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess." Hebrews 3:1
