When I was about thirteen, my mom thought it was a good idea to let my friends and I drink beer and smoke marijuana at my house. It's not that she really wanted us to use drugs, but since WE wanted to, she figured we might as well not be out doing it on the street. Today I heard of a young teen who was remarking, "my parents are cool!" He went on to add that his parents, "would let him do anything!" I felt a tear well up in my eye as I heard the story. This young man, like me at one time, thought that his parents were the greatest because they let him use drugs and stay out all night. The truth is, parents who allow such things must hate their children. No, really, "hate" isn't too strong a word! What's worse, many of them are only covering up their own addictions and short comings by allowing their children to do the same. For fifteen years after my mother was so "cool" to me, I struggled with several "bad habits" and a couple of hard-core addictions, too. I learned each one of them under the supervision of my mom and a step-father or two who also used drugs and alcohol. If your parents lay out strong boundaries for you and then hold you accountable to them, they love you! That's right, "love" isn't always a pat on the back... sometimes it's a kick in the pants! Oh, what I might have accomplished with the fifteen years of my life I can hardly remember. If only my parents had not been so cool!
"He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him." Proverbs 13:24
