During my 20 year Air Force career, I had plenty of opportunities to work on super high-tech programs not so different from the space shuttle. As a program manager, I've had more than a few occasions where an engineer or other team member would raise concerns about a problem, only to have other team members and even other similarly-trained experts disagree with them. Often, other voices will overpower the lone dissenter. Having some experience with these things, I have no doubt that something similar happened prior to the Columbia disaster this weekend. Someone somewhere saw what they believed to be a problem, and their opinion was discounted after other voices chimed in, evidence was weighed, and risk was deemed to be minimal. And such is life with all humans. God sends lone voices to "call out in the desert." He sends prophets, people anointed with His Spirit to preach the truth about His love and salvation through His Son. He wants people to hear and be saved. And many do hear the "still small voice" of God. Unfortunately, they later chose to discount it after all the other voices chime in and the enemy insists that the risk is minimal, but the rewards of "being your own God" are great! If the program manager of the Columbia did hear a dissenting voice and chose to discount it, he will never the be same again. Neither will anyone who chooses to discount the Word of the Lord.
"Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before: 'Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.'" Hebrews 4:7
