The Greek adjective "hagios" is translated into English as "holy." It's definitely a word Christians throw around quite a bit, and surely one that's found throughout the Scriptures. I've heard folks remark of others with the word. For example, they might say, "She's holy!" or "He's a holy individual." Surely we've all heard references to the opposite... "That's unholy!" So, with the vast amount of references to it, I still wonder if many of us really know what it is or what it means? "Holy" is a moral quality. Roughly translated, it means "set apart." Someone who's "holy" is someone who's been made that way by God himself--consecrated and separated from the crowd by God. It is impossible to be holy by using your own abilities or your own moral compass. Anyone or anything containing holy qualities or "holiness" received it from the only one who is Holy of His own accord--that being God Almighty! So, the next time you see it, receive it for the incredible blessing and image of God it contains. And, the next time you try to attain it, remember it's only possible through drawing close to God and receiving it directly from Him.
"But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'" 1 Peter 1:15 .
