In one of his infamous surveys of Christians and churches, pollster George Barna writes that fully sixty-six percent of church goers are nothing more than "observers." I've also heard that the great evangelist Billy Graham is quoted as saying that probably eighty-five percent of people sitting in pews on Sunday are not "saved." Although Barna's research is based on empirical data, and Graham's is clearly based on personal observation, both gentlemen reach similar conclusions as did Jesus writing through John in the book of Revelation. Only one of the seven churches spoken of in Revelation were commended for completing the work they were given and for keeping the faith. Today, I'm afraid churches would fare even worse than 1 in 7 on a thumbs-up/thumbs down rating. And unfortunately for some, even in the best of churches, there are still plenty of people who are sitting on the sidelines, for whatever reason. Let me say this clearly... Sitting in church is of no eternal value if Jesus doesn't have your heart... and it's your heart He searches, not the accomplishments of your church, or even those completed by your own hands.
"Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds." Revelation 2:23b
