When I was a young man, my mother once caught me throwing something into my dresser drawer. Knowing she'd kill me (euphemistically, I hoped) if she opened the drawer and found out I was hiding a pack of cigarettes, when she asked me what I was hiding, I responded, "Nothing Mom. I swear to God!" Not two seconds later, she opened the drawer and busted me. Although I did survive the punishment, I'm not sure I ever recovered from the depth of my depravity. Was I willing to invoke the name of God--somehow incorporating Him into my sin? Evidently I was... and my heart is bothered by it now 30 years later. The word of God is clear when it comes to promising or swearing anything. A Christian's word should be his or her bond, and it should be left at that. So be careful when you speak. Don't invoke the name of God in any type of promise, just let the your words speak for themselves.
"Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one." Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 5:37)
