As I was coming home the other evening, my house looked like an airport beacon from the street! It looked like my kids had every single light in the house on! This day and age, we just don't think about lights and electricity much. We put the plug in the socket or hit the switch and "presto," there's light! When Jesus walked the earth, things were much different. Electricity was still relegated solely to lightening storms, and nights without a visible moon were so dark you literally could not see your hand before your face. In those days, a family with means probably had just one lamp--or in rare instances, maybe two. Now imagine, you've got just one little lamp to light your entire house for the evening. Would you light it and then shove it under a basket or in a corner where it couldn't be seen, or would you put it up on a lamp stand where everyone could see (and be seen) by its light? Yea, that's what I thought... too bad we aren't as likely to shine the Light we've received from Jesus Christ. Many of us cover His light by the way we live our lives and by our fear of rejection if we tell what really makes us tick. The result: People all around us are walking around in darkness.
"He [Jesus] said to them 'Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don't you put it on its stand?" Mark 4:21
