I believe there is quite a lot of confusion about the purpose and the condition of the Old Testament Law. For some odd reason, about half of the churches I've visited seem to be trying to keep the Law alive. In contrast, the other half seem to be trying to prove they can do just about anything because the Old Testament is "irrelevant" in today's church. Far be it from me to say that 100% of churches are wrong, but I do believe that the Law has lost its meaning for many of us. No matter how hard people or even whole churches try, they will never be able to keep the Law. In a nutshell, that's the whole point. God gave us the Law so that we could prove to ourselves that we were and are evil in His sight. In a sense, it is the Law that proves to our hearts that we need a Savior. Does that mean that in the light of the New Testament all of the commands of the Law are now meaningless? Certainly not! In fact, most of it can be used as an awesome measure of a Christian's walk with the Lord. But... a person's salvation is not determined by his or her ability to keep even a portion of the Law. Salvation is determined by their condition with Christ.
"Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin." Romans 3:20
