Whenever I recommend that a young person be kind to someone who's treating them badly, I always get the same crazy look! It's as if they're saying (and often they ARE saying), "Kilby, you're crazy!" No doubt I must sound crazy, but the thought isn't original to me. The concept actually comes directly from the mouth of Jesus. Still, that's not the way the world operates today. Just yesterday I wasn't sure which way to turn at a stop sign and paused for a moment. Within the matter of about two seconds, the person behind me started freaking out on his horn and presenting me with some not so friendly hand signals. What's more, my son was in the car to witness it. Fortunately, what once would have been a great invitation for me to back over someone's car with my truck, is a whole new situation today! I just waved the angry motorist by. And... hopefully my son learned that Dad practices what he preaches. Jesus said, "Love your enemies." As crazy as it sounds, I've honestly learned that it's really the only way. People are always going to get on your nerves. As long as we're on this earth, there will be people who will treat us badly just because they feel the need. The way we respond is our choice, and as followers of Christ, we should choose to follow His example.
"But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you." Jesus of Nazareth (Luke 6:27)
So... who is it who's treating you badly these days? Crazy or not, make a decision to forgive them right now. Then, begin a secret prayer campaign in their honor. Pray that God will bless them, and that they will know the joy you've found in Christ! You might be surprised that your heart is also changed.
Hallelujah!
