When I was a teenager, drinking alcohol was fun... or at least I thought so! It seemed like we just couldn't have fun without having some type of alcoholic beverage along for the ride. I decided not to drink to excess any longer the first time I snuck by my mother and laid on my bed only to have spin until I threw up. I made that same decision more than a hundred times, but I just couldn't keep my word. After I had a few, I would have a few more... I have that particular gene that makes me especially susceptible to problem drinking. Four DUI's and about 20 bar fights later, I gave my life to Christ. Now the only time I'm intoxicated is when my dentist decides I need to be!
Some will tell you that the Bible tells us not to drink. It does not. But it does tell us not to be drunk, and to obey the laws of the world we live in (the moral ones that is!). If you're under age, that means you should not drink--ever! If you are of the drinking age, I suggest you consider this Proverb before you start to drink. It came true for me far too many times.
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. Your eyes will see strange sights and your mind imagine confusing things. You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging. "They hit me," you will say, "but I'm not hurt! They beat me, but I don't feel it! When will I wake up so I can find another drink?" Proverbs 23:29-35
