I've always found it interesting that the people who so desperately wanted Jesus killed, also thought they were the most righteous people alive. They knew they were "God's chosen people," and they put their faith in their ability to keep every letter of the Biblical Law. At the very same time, however, they ignored the entire spirit of the Law. Although it's easy to look back two thousand years and scoff at their ignorance, I wonder how many Christians alive today would fair much better under the unwavering eye of God? As Jesus asserted, we often honor God with our lips, but our hearts are far from Him. Remember that those men who bought information from Judas Iscariot in their attempt to murder Jesus, were human... we are just as human, and without having the Spirit of God working inside of us, we're capable of just as much evil. Although it's interesting that when Judas threw the money back at them, they decided to give it to charity. It's also equally interesting that we can also be blind to our sins.
"The chief priests picked up the coins and said, 'It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.' So they decided to use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners." Matthew 27:6-7
