Most people think that God wants to enslave them. The truth is that God wants to set them free. It's Satan that wants to enslave people, both Christian and non-Christian, and he uses their own selfish and prideful desires to do just that! For some people, food is their slavemaster. For other's, it's money, sex, power, and sometimes even religion. Many who come to Christ believe that all their problems will immediately go away, and then they're disheartened if that doesn't happen. No doubt, God in His goodness does sometimes cure people from things the moment they cry out. For most, however, He only promises that through Christ we have the Power to defeat the enemy. We have the responsibility to turn from our sin and draw closer to Him for help. Through the process of growing closer to Him and depending on His Spirit we can find freedom from what enslaves us. Unfortunately, for many that process never even begins.
"For they [false prophets and teachers] mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity--for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning." 2 Peter 18-20
