It's St. Valentines' Day again! Generally though, today we just drop the "Saint' part, no doubt in part because the holiday has become more of an "eros" love celebration. "Eros" is just one Greek word for "love" from which we get out word "erotic". No doubt that's why the jewelry stores and places like Victoria's Secret have been packed with American men for days now! They know that if the sacrifice a few bucks, they might get something in return! And if they don't... there might be hell to pay! From my studies, however, the "holiday" was originally more of a "holy day" to celebrate love like "philia" (friendship) "agape" (true love) and "storge" (love of one's family). Sure, it's human nature to celebrate things that get us something in return or which entice our sensual side, but the Christian has a higher-calling. We are actually called to be "known by our love". We are to be busy reflecting the love of Christ onto the world around us-and not just to those who may reciprocate. It's this kind of love that sacrifices and dies for complete strangers... and ultimately changes the world forever.
"You have heard that the law of Moses says, 'Love your neighbor' and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and on the unjust, too. If you love only those who love you, what good is that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 5:43-47)
