At the urging of an intelligent supervisor, I started putting a portion of my paycheck into a savings plan when I was just eighteen. For more than twenty years I continued the plan, and increased what I was able to save many times over. Through the years, I began to feel more and more comfortable that what I had been able to save would help insure a comfortable retirement in later years. The reality is that the stock market hasn't been so friendly over the last three years or so and much of what I had saved is gone. And maybe rightly so, because putting faith in a bank account is a foolish thing to do. My faith in God has grown as a result, and I think I see things more clearly--putting more stock in my treasure in heaven as a result. Still, the truth remains that what is saved and thought well protected today, can be gone tomorrow. Believe it or not, the same is true even of heavenly treasure. Imagine that you spend much of your life walking firmly in the faith, and then veer off the path even for a while. Do you realize that even a few sinful mistakes can ravage what you've worked all your life to put away?
"Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully." 2 John 1:8
