Friends,
It has been an interesting month. Harvest was given an opportunity to share our ministry with a local group of charitable donors. Three organizations present and one is chosen to win roughly $10,000. Part of the presentation includes what we would specifically do with the funding if we were awarded the grant.
This of course sent me on a mission: Find specific things with actual price tags that we would purchase with this money. I thought of three and, quickly, since I only had a couple days to prepare, sent out emails to get quotes. I spoke with roughly five companies about a variety of things, all with the understanding we could only purchase if awarded this grant. When we did not win it, I had to send a “thank you for your time, but we cannot move forward at this point” email.
Part of me wonders if some of the emails I get from people seeking help are like those feeler emails I sent. What is really involved? What is going to be required of me? What are the guidelines? How much can I get? What is possible?
I respond the same way the companies I emailed respond: What are you looking to receive? When do you need it by? What are the options? What problem are you looking to solve?
Sometimes after a few emails back and forth I just stop hearing from people, and I wonder if, unlike me, they received their “grant” and their lives went back to normal. Sometimes people will engage so far as to set up an in person meeting and then not show up or return calls. But other times, other glorious times, I get to look into the eyes of a person, or hear their voice on the phone when needs have been met and I get to say, “it is because someone loves Jesus, and you – the cost has been paid, this is a free gift.”
Blessings,
Elizabeth Kilby
