Friends,
Aaron bought me a cross stitching kit for Christmas. I absolutely love being able to sit and think, pray, or just be while working on this project. Very slowly, but steadily, the image is starting to take form and the colors are starting to make sense together. It is a beautiful, colorful array of flowers on a tree and it is whimsical and fun.
The back is a different story. It’s a bit of a mess. There are string ends that need to be trimmed and some places where I missed a square and had to go back. You can see the stops and starts and all the times I didn’t make the best choice in sequence. You can see that I am learning a new skill.
It made me think, as these things often do, of how we often only see the “front” of people. We see the composed parts they are willing to show us. Not only do we often not see the stops and starts, the learning curve, or the mess ups, we tend to forget they are there. We don’t generally stop to give the benefit of the doubt or to be curious why someone is the way they are. If we were willing to be patient with the unfolding of their story, or even just to not assume the worst, we may gain a whole new perspective of the people we interact with.
My kids keep asking why I am sewing the back side. They don’t seem to understand that without the work in the back, the front will never be a finished picture.
In Christ,
Elizabeth Kilby
