Dear Friends,
When I was a teenager, I pretty much knew everything. Okay, not “everything”, but in my mind, anything that was worth knowing! My life centered around “me” mostly, and then, of course, my friends. Together, my friends and I had our “norms” and the things we thought were “cool” and right. Anything related to family, religion, politics, school, books, etc., were NOT cool, and so we had nothing to do with any of it. Things that were cool included, bell bottom jeans (yep, I’m that old), recreational drug use, alcohol, random immorality, and pretty much holding up a middle finger to society. Obviously, things changed in my mind, but certainly not overnight, and certainly not without the influence of some absolutely genuine Christ-followers who loved on me before they preached at me.
Hopefully I’ve drawn you a picture you’ll relate to if only a little bit. (I’ll admit I was a fairly extreme case). But if you can relate at all, I’d like you to think of a rebellious teen you know. Maybe it’s your kid or a grandkid (I have both). Or maybe it’s the child/grand of a friend. Now that you’ve got them in mind, what are some things we all know they probably think are cool? What are some untruths they believe are true? Maybe it’s picking new pronouns or refusing to go to church. What are some things they likely think are “uncool”? Now… prayerfully consider what Jesus would have you do for them? Maybe it’s to pray, (and that is no small thing!). Maybe it’s to withhold what you may think about an issue long enough to really listen to them and hear why they think this or that. Either will take a lot of patience, and a larger dose of humility. In the end, I can tell you I would not have become a believer if not for some folks who did all of that for me. I’ve also never led anyone to Christ without first doing those things. What’s more, I don’t think you can or will either without a similar mindset.
Blessings in Christ,
Pastor Jim Kilby
