"Gimme, gimme, gimme... by the way, my name is Jimmy!"
Does that sound anything like the prayers and petitions you bring to the Lord? Surely, there is nothing sinful in asking God to provide for your needs. Unfortunately, many of us go way beyond asking for needs to be filled, or for things we could use to serve others. Many prayers are little more than a laundry list of request for material wealth, or to ask God for things that would probably do us much damage if they were actually received. A prayer is a conversation with God. If you will, a conversation with a friend who's given you everything you have, to include allowing you to gain from His only Son's death. Wouldn't a genuine conversation with such a friend include a great amount of gratitude and adoration? As you spend time with God, consider how you may sound to Him. What parent would continue to give material things to a child who clearly was ungrateful and spoiled rotten? And, though some parents might actually consider such a thing, possibly to cover for poor parenting, you can be sure that God has no such guilt. When you spend time with God, here's a model you might use. It's helped to keep many a Christian focused on God rather than on self.
