"The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were unclean, that is, unwashed." Mark 7:1-2
I get the distinct impression from the Scriptures that the religious folks of Jesus' day thought he was a bum. No doubt it didn't help that his cousin John (the Baptist) was famous for eating honey and locusts. I find it interesting that the same group of people who mocked Jesus and His disciples for little things like not washing their hands before they ate, were secretly plotting His murder from their royal-looking thrones in the synagogues. Although I'm not privy to anyone plotting anyone else's murder, it's clear that many murders have been committed in the name of "religion." Jesus was not here to bring us more religion--from the attitude of the Pharisees you can see we already had enough of that. Jesus came to repair the broken relationship between us and His Father. In the end, the "religious" of His day did finally have Him murdered. Those same "unwashed" hands shed the blood that cleanses our very souls if we trust in Him alone!
