In the classic song, "Cats in the Cradle," we hear the gut-wrenching story of a father who was just too busy for his son. Later, the son is just too busy to spend much time with his aging father. In the opposite vein, I've heard it said that you should be careful how you treat your parents, 'cause your children just might treat you similarly when you're older. As they say, "what comes around, goes around!" Lately, I've been learning this lesson in a new way. For the last several years I've mentored a few high school boys. One of the young men went into the military last year. As he prepared to depart, he debriefed me extensively on my military experience. While he was in basic training, he called me nearly every day and wanted me to write him at least once a week. After basic training he entered a military school and with the additional free time he found himself involved in drinking and other troubles. I hardly heard from him for months, until he was nearly court martialed for some trouble he'd gotten into. Once again, I heard from him almost every day as he cried, asked for my advice and wanted me to pray for him. As you might guess, I've not heard from him in months now that the "trouble" has passed over. It's painful to feel that someone you care so much for would only contact you when they needed something. Otherwise, you'd be no more than a passing thought. Is it just me, or do you think God is trying to tell me something about my sporadic prayer life? Oh, I pray several times every day mind you. But I rarely get serious about it unless I'm in trouble!
"What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him?" Deuteronomy 4:7
