Over the last couple of months, my family and I have had several close friends lose children to miscarriages. When I heard another young friend had a miscarriage in her fifth month of pregnancy, my heart just broke for her. As I pondered the whole situation and prayed for her, I was taken back to when my youngest son Andrew was born. Just a few minutes after my wife went into hard labor, the doctors became alarmed when little Andrew's heartbeat became weaker and abruptly began to slow. I caught the alarmed look between the doctor and the nurse as they were clearly contemplating an emergency caesarian. Just then, the doctor looked at me and said, "We need to get this baby out of her." Armed with all the information I needed, I looked at my wife and told her what she needed to hear. "Honey, the baby's heartbeat is slowing... you need to push this baby out right now." Just as I suspected, my bride's maternal instincts were true to form. One push later I was the proud father of a bouncing baby boy. One day I'll tell Andrew just how awesome his mother is!
Now, back to today... and back to our grieving friends, as I thought of everything we've been through the last month or so, I suddenly got a stark realization. Each of these friends had viable babies that died in their wombs and each of these mothers had to undergo the inconceivable agony of labor, knowing they'd deliver a dead child. Oh, how the Lord must grieve with us at times like this... And oh, how he must grieve when he sees a perfectly healthy human being refuse to be born again, choosing instead to live a life of hopeless searching, waiting only to be delivered stillborn at Satan's front steps.
"I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." Jesus of Nazareth (John 3:3b)
