I am clearly a conservative Christian. Anyone who knows me personally would immediately give testimony to that fact. But I wonder, would many Americans be able to describe exactly what a "conservative Christian" is? Frankly, I've become irritated a multitude of times as I've watched television shows that interviewed so-called "conservative Christians." Honestly, I don't think I want to be grouped with most of them. Being conservative is the opposite of being liberal. It's a political statement, and sometimes a statement about where one gets their values. But being a Christian clearly means being Christ-like. Most of the more popular "conservative Christian" voices I've heard seem to feel that they have the right to beat down anyone who doesn't think like they do. They appear to know everything, and simply refuse to hear otherwise. Sure, right is right and wrong is wrong--we should never say that it isn't. But being Christ-like also means "loving your neighbor as yourself," whether you like his politics or not. The same Bible that gives us our conservative values also tells us to love the Lord, and to prove it by loving our neighbors. I think a lot more people might consider being both "conservative" and maybe even "Christian" if we were to practice what our Lord preaches.
