"God, thank you for this day, and thank you for all the people, and thank you for...."
While prayer is something I write about often, and the need for which I'm adamant about, most of the prayers I hear appear to be no more than meaningless drivel! "Drivel," you ask? I mean that praying to your heavenly Father with your mind turned off isn't praying at all. In Jesus' day some folks thought they could get God to answer their prayers by repeating their requests over and over, seemingly thousands of times. Jesus correctly rebuked them. Can God be worn down by a mere human's incessant chanting? And while I doubt many Christians are guilty of endless repetitions of the same request, I DO think we're guilty of saying things we don't mean. Things that have become nothing more than filler in feeble prayers. Think for a moment about the Lord's prayer. You know the one, "Our Father, who art in heaven..." In no more than a few lines Jesus modeled true prayer for us. Flip open to it in your Bible (Matthew 6) or write it in your journal to read over a few times. When you're finished, take a few minutes to talk to God like He's your friend and your confidant. Like someone who sent His own Son through Hell to get you back from the devil. That's of course who He is... and He can hardly wait to really talk to you!
"And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him." Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 6:7-8)
