Litigious. A big word in most folk's books, but one I'm sure we are all familiar with the slang terms for. Litigious is the adjective form of the word "litigate" which basically means someone's being sued. No doubt we've got an unbelievably litigious society in the United States. It's hard to watch a television show without seeing a commercial for one of those "if you've been injured" law firms. The back of my telephone book sports the profiles of the five most famous injury attorneys in my area. You'd think a law abiding and honest person would be free from frivolous lawsuits, but innocent people are sued every day. No doubt some people deserve to be sued, and some people deserve to be compensated for wrongs done to them, but I believe the vast majority of lawsuits have either a terrible inability to get along at their core, or, more likely, greed. Basically, many people just want to get other people's hard earned money. As Christians we're not supposed to be involved in such things. We are a family, and we are supposed to act like it! If there's any way around it, Christians are never to sue one another. Never heard the Bible forbid such a thing? I'm not surprised... even Christians are litigious these days. And in doing so, we give unbelievers a great reason to doubt the Lordship of our Savior.
"If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life? Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, appoint as judges even men of little account in the church!... but instead, one brother goes to law against another--and this in front of unbelievers! The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers." 1 Corinthians 6:1-4, 6
