Money has an interesting effect on people. Have you noticed how a child will instinctively learn the word "mine," but has to be taught the concept of sharing? The same adults who are teaching their children the concept of sharing toys often have similar problems with sharing their money. I pride myself in being an attentive father, so I've done everything I can to model Christian financial concepts for my children. They each have age appropriate chores, and when the chores are done promptly and properly, there's always a financial reward. I remember when one of my daughters who had just gotten her allowance wanted me to pay for a toy at the store. "Didn't you just get your allowance?," I asked. "Yeah, but I don't want to spend MY money!," was the response. Here's a child who has never wanted for anything, yet still doesn't even want to pay for something she wants. Grown-ups can be the same when it comes to their toys, too, but it gets even worse when it comes to giving back to the Lord. Being "stingy" is ugly in kids, but it's even uglier in adults. Learning to "hold things loosely" is probably the hardest of the Christian lessons to learn, but it is also probably the key to learning all the others. Will we ever realize that everything we have came from the Lord in the first place?
"Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand." 1 Chronicles 29:14b
