For years I've seen a troubling trend as smaller churches close their doors and others grow larger. No doubt there's a lot of great stuff going in many of what have become "megachurches," but I've also noticed that the "family" atmosphere has also been replaced by more of an "audience" atmosphere. Many large churches have overcome this problem by breaking people into small groups where they can function on a more personal basic. Possibly fearing a lack of control, other churches have been unable or unwilling to make that change. Subsequently they've many have lost untold numbers of people as they've "fallen through the cracks." Most have simply left unnoticed. I've even heard pastors proclaim things like, "We'll, we're still growing like crazy. Can we help it if we can't reach everyone." Of course, reaching everyone is not possible, but you would think reaching those who are attending your church might be a possibility! I believe it's people like those who Jesus is speaking of in the parable of the lost sheep. It's as if we're willing to say, "good riddance" to weaker brothers and sisters who just "fade away." Jesus would not take that attitude, and we shouldn't either.
Now the tax collectors and "sinners" were all gathering around to hear him. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." Then Jesus told them this parable: "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
