It's hard to flip through television channels today without running into at least two or three info-mercials selling something to help us be more healthy. We're obsessed with our bodies, which is quite ironic since we're also obsessed with food and drink! (My waistline is proof that food and exercise are in absolute conflict!) If television isn't enough, flip open a magazine, or read some of your spam mail and you'll see the same type of adds. "We'll take years off your life," or "Inches off your waist!" And while I'm all-for being healthy, I'm also for keeping things in perspective. We cannot take years off our lives--we've lived all the days we've been allotted thus far, and there will be an end to those days before we know it. No matter how healthy we are, no matter how much we work-out, eat well, or see our plastic surgeons, we will still get wrinkly, and one day we will die. The Scriptures are stocked with warnings against putting stock in the "flesh," whether that be the body, OR the sinful nature. The flesh is not to be trusted--it quite simply is mortal.
"Join with others in following my example, brothers, and take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you. For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body." Phillippians 3:17-21
