I had a young friend go into the hospital for surgery. Since she looked as healthy as could be, I wondered to myself what in the world could be so wrong that she would need an operation. I talked to her mother and she confided that her daughter was quite healthy, but doctors feared a small problem with her stomach would eventually lead to serious problems when she was older. Their advice was to operate now, while the problem is controllable and the patient is healthy.
As I spent some quiet time with the Lord today I asked Him to show me areas of my life where I might be blind to my own sins. The word "surgery" came to mind again, so I prayed for Him to expose any problem He found and to cut it out. As I prayed I thought, this just might be quite painful--but if it's there, it's only going to get worse. Better to take care of it now.
"Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting."
Psalm 139:23-24
Surgery can be quite traumatic and the healing process long and painful. But, left to grow, sin is like a malignant tumor that will eventually kill the patient. Better to submit to the operation while there's still hope for a full recovery!
