"Don't you tell me what to do mister! I'm a volunteer here! I think I'll just go find another church!"
The church today mirrors society in some really good ways, and in some really terrible ways too. One of the most difficult things for me to handle is people with the attitude of a "volunteer"! If you finally get someone to serve, often it's like you owe them something when they're done. It seems to me the proper approach might be that of "servant" instead of volunteer. As Christians, we're all supposed to be members of the Body of Christ. Notice I didn't say members of the First Church of Somecity. We're members of the Body of Jesus Christ, and we should act and serve like we're grateful for the grace we've been given. What's more, when we address those ordained by God to serve in the local church, we should use a respectful tone and attitude. Enough of this "I'll just find another church." How about, "Sir, how could I serve this Body. I'm gifted in..."
"Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work." 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13
