mediator: n One that mediates, esp. a person who serves as an intermediary to reconcile differences.
Since the first sin, man has been dead. Sure, we're living and breathing air, but we're also dead. We're dead because we begin dying even as our first cells begin to divide and multiply in our mother's wombs. We're dead, because without an atonement for those sins, we'll pay for them ourselves in hell. Man is sinful, and death and punishment is our payment in full. What man needed was a mediator... someone who could reconcile the unfathomable differences between our sinful selves and a perfect and holy God. Unfortunately for God, the only mediator that could fill-the-bill was His Son, Jesus Christ. Fortunately for us, He loved us enough to send that Son.
"For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men--the testimony given in its proper time." 1 Timothy 2:5-6
