Remember the comedian, Billy Crystal, who made the line, "You look marvelous!" so famous? It's been a few years now, but I can still hear his accent when I think of the line. As I was going through some Scriptures today I found that the line wasn't completely the comedian's own. It seems Jesus said something similar to the church in what was then called Sardis. This church was well known for their deeds and for their incredible faith. Unfortunately, it was all just a show. Just today I preached at a church and was shocked at the glowing praise the pastor who introduced me gave as I took the platform. I couldn't help but think that although the introduction made me sound wonderful, his perception of me wasn't reality. I am still struggling with sin just like everyone else in the room. I may look marvelous from a distance and some of my accomplishments may make people think well of me, but none of that matters to God. And it's God I'm concerned about. I want to be looking marvelous to Him!
"I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God." Jesus of Nazareth (Revelation 3:1b-2)
