Friends,
We had a request come in through Harvest Helps and as I dialed the phone, I was curious about who would answer. A deep voice came on the other end of the line, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. After initial introductions, this man shared his story with me. I was able to speak some hope and life into him and I walked away feeling completely encouraged. While we see a lot of darkness and a lot of people running toward darkness, this man was actively moving toward the light.
At some point in all these conversations, I make sure to mention God. Sometimes it is very natural, sometimes it is an awkward transition, but since all this work is only because of Him, it would be silly to miss this opportunity. However, I also try to be wise and almost cautious in how I approach this part of the conversation. There are many people who have been hurt by the church, individual Christians, or just have a warped view of the Lord. Sometimes it is well received and sometimes the conversation gets very, very quiet.
Either way, I hope seeds are planted to remind people when things get tough, there are people out there who love the Lord and care about the people around them – even people they have only “met” through emails and phone calls. I get to see this at work regularly in my church, ministry, and my family – but there are many people who don’t. There are many people who don’t know the love people can have for others simply because they are human too.
Although a lot of our lives is simply doing our best to live how Jesus would in front of the people around us, don’t miss the opportunities to speak His name and remind people HE is the reason we can freely love the people He puts in our path.
In Christ,
Elizabeth Kilby
