Many approach Jesus as a wonderful and God-sent way to receive forgiveness of sins. Like a trip to a filling station, they pray a prayer, receive a water baptism and believe they've received salvation. While those things are certainly part of a new Christian's walk, the actions we must take do not stop there. The Scriptures are chock full of exhortations for us to then prove our love for Jesus with our deeds. Our good works don't earn us salvation, but they are evidence of the salvation we've received. Proof that the Holy Spirit resides in us. Instead, we prefer to approach Jesus with an "I'll follow you until it gets uncomfortable" attitude. Those biblical characters who mentioned such an approach to His face not only received firm rebukes, but most were told plainly they would never approach His throne. The truth is that Jesus wants all of us, or he'll have none of us. He doesn't share his disciples with other gods. To think anything different is to believe that a truly loving husband would allow his bride to be passed around among his friends. She's either 100% your bride, or she's nothing in your eyes.
"Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will fine it." Matthew 10:37-39
