When I was young a fine young boxer by the name of Cassius Clay was storming the world with his feats of strength. He later converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali. Who's not heard of this great boxer even today? Although he is quickly becoming an old man, his boxing is still legendary. And it wasn't just his boxing. Part of what made him so famous was his unashamed self-promotion, always exclaiming "I am the greatest!" People either loved it, or they hated it, but no one could ignore it! Frankly, he was the greatest--but only at boxing, and only for a short time. To be great for all eternity is a much simpler task.
"An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. Then he said to them, 'Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For he who is least among you all--he is the greatest.'"
So why did Jesus choose a little child and tell them that serving such a child would be welcoming Jesus (and the Father). Because the little child could do nothing for them in return. Serving the child would be impossible unless they forgot about themselves and stooped to simply lead a child to Christ.
