Imagine a teenager gets the chance to stay home alone for the weekend. There are only a few rules laid down, but they are each firmly stated by the parents. No friends over, no using the stove, and no driving the car. After the teen agrees to the rules, the parents leave. The first thing he (or she) does is call about 50 friends over for a party. Then he gets into the car and heads out to retrieve some "party favors." At the end of the weekend the house is a total disaster and there's simply no time to put everything back together. In a valiant attempt to ward off serious punishment, the child again borrows the car and heads out to buy groceries for dinner. He's not sure, but he's hoping his parents will forgive him if he cooks them their favorite meal. Of course, he'll need to cook it in the stove he agreed not to use!
1. Do the parents forgive the teen?
2. Would the parents rather have obedience or a home cooked meal?
3. Why do we think God is any different?
Immediately after God saves Israel from their enemies, King Saul completely breaks his end of the deal and ignores God's commands. Later, he decides he'll make an offering to God, even though the monument he just had erected for himself stands as a witness to his unrepentant heart... Here's what God's prophet said:
"Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination [witchcraft], and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king." 1 Samuel 22b-23
