Of the hundreds of thousands of Israelites the Lord led out of Egypt and promised to bring into the promised land, only two people of that entire generation actually entered the land the Lord gave them. Every Israelite who disobeyed God (made the golden calf as an idol, etc.) died in the desert except for these two. One was Joshua, who replaced Moses who was not allowed to enter because he disobeyed God in anger one day, and the other was a very special man named Caleb. Why was Caleb allowed to enter the land when hundreds of thousands of others were not? Here's God's answer:
"When the Lord heard what you said, he was angry and solemnly swore: 'Not a man of this evil generation shall see the good land I swore to give your forefathers, except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give
him and his descendants the land he set his feet on, BECAUSE HE FOLLOWED THE LORD WHOLEHEARTEDLY." Deuteronomy 1:34-36 (Emphasis mine)
Caleb "followed the Lord wholeheartedly" even when he was the only one doing it! Everyone else surely thought he was a "do-gooder" and an idiot! Later, they no doubt wished they could trade places with that do-gooder. And, just like Caleb, those who follow the Lord in this generation, will begin a new life in the promised land (heaven) while the mockers and scoffers will remain in death (hell).
