Living in the "big city" I don't get many opportunities to be in total darkness. Even if I were to go outside at night, I'd have to get miles from the city before I could actually begin to experience total darkness. By then, I'd probably be under somebody else's street lights! When I was a young man, however, I did experience near total darkness when I lived on a farm. Life there was different, with the closest big city being nearly 100 miles away. On a cloudy night on our farm, it was flat-out DARK outside. From time-to-time when my parents would send me out to tend to the animals or get something from the shed, I would find myself scared to death. It wouldn't matter if I'd walked that same path 1000 times--total darkness is scary, and it made me nervous to say the least. Now imagine with me for a minute that you are in total darkness. No matter which direction you look, up, down, east or west, there is nothing to see except the blackness of night. Imagine you've been standing there afraid to move and shaking for hours... just then you see a glimmer of light off in the distance. As the light grows closer and brighter, do you think you'd be able to take your eyes off of it even for a moment? Probably not... unless you liked the darkness and wanted nothing to do with the light. That would be a conscious decision on your part, just like the conscious decision many would-be Christians make to stay in the darkness where they believe their sins are protected by the lack of light.
"We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.' We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a LIGHT SHINING IN A DARK PLACE, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts." 2 Peter 1:16-19 (emphasis mine)
