As a young man, I always laughed at the fictional "Push-Me-Pull-Me" character in Dr. Doolittle. It became more than just a fictional character to me, but something to ponder for hours. "What if..." I would labor. "What if something like that really existed. How would they get anywhere?" Not so long ago I saw a long train with two engines, one at each end. Weird I thought... Isn't one of those where the caboose is supposed to go? Today, both of these pictures came back to my mind as I thought of the struggle many people have with what I'll call, "Works based Salvation." So what does it mean? Basically, it's when otherwise all-around good folks work themselves to death trying to do enough good deeds to get themselves into heaven. They somehow believe that God will approve of them if they do enough good for other folks. Sadly, just like the Push-Me-Pull-Me or the train with the engine at both ends, "works" must be at the right end of salvation if they're to account for anything. Think of it this way. Good deeds or "works" done before meeting Jesus are worthless in God's eyes. Sure, they're good deeds, but you're still a sinner in need of salvation. Good deeds or "works" AFTER giving your life to Jesus is the true Christian's way of saying, "Thank You Jesus!" for what they've freely received by His Grace. One is pushing... the other is pulling, but only one will ever amount to anything."
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:8-10
