When I was in the military I learned some really weird stuff. For example, if I was walking down the street with someone senior to me, I was supposed to make sure to walk on his/her left. As I moved up in the ranks, I had the opportunity to work in jobs with very senior people (like the U. S. Secretary of State and stuff like that). Then I learned a little more about why this "position of honor" was so important. On a daily basis we would have meetings, and we'd have to know who out-ranked whom, so that we could give the proper positions of honor to the appropriate people. For example, if my boss would have someone higher than him joining him at the table, he would give the position of honor (the seat just to the right of the center of the table) to the visitor. It may not seem like a big deal, but if you accidentally show disrespect to a dignitary from another country, bad stuff can happen! If you've ever wondered why Jesus is said to be seated at the right hand of the Father, now you know! Jesus honored the Father by coming to earth to save us, and now the Father honors the Son with the position of authority--the seat to His right!
"God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. Exalted to the right hand of God..." Acts 2:32-33a
