A lack of self esteem is clearly the #1 problem I see in teens I work with. It's worse in girls, but boys suffer from it plenty as well. Why? Why would people who look just fine on the surface, have such deep seated doubts about their own self-worth. I believe it's a simple problem, but one that is unbelievably prevalent today. It probably all gets started by the"experts" like psychologists who tell us we can build other people's self-esteems for them. This is simply untrue. We can set up situations where people can build their own self-esteem through accomplishing things they otherwise might not have tried, or didn't think they could accomplish. For example, a parent can challenge a child to bring home better grades, or do better at something they've been slacking at, continually being the "cheerleader" and coach until the child gains strength (and ultimately self esteem) from their accomplishments. The bottom line though is that once a person truly understands that God made them, and loved them so much He gave His Son for them, they'll want to meet the challenges God lays before them. The Spirit of God will urge them to live their lives as a huge "thank you" to God, and healthy (note "healthy" not "puffed-up") self-esteems will follow.
"But we ought always to thank God for you brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. He called YOU to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ." 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 (Emphasis mine)
