You don't have to work with young people long to be shocked at the way many of them are cutting, burning, and otherwise purposefully damaging their own bodies. I've often asked myself, "why," but the question many times doesn't have an answer. Many of the people who "self-mutilate" don't know why. Some do it to have control over something--over ANYTHING! Others do it in an attempt to cry out for someone to notice them... for someone to listen to them and love them. At any rate, it's a coping mechanism. I get a substantial amount of mail asking for help in this area, and although I did self-mutilate some when I was a teenager, I only did it as an attempt to gain acceptance from a gang I wanted to join--it was a requirement for membership! I honestly don't have much information beyond a real basic understanding of some of the psychology involved. What I do have, however, is a good knowledge of what our God is like! For my many young friends who are interested in more information or looking for help, try visiting www.selfinjury.org . Youth leaders and parents might benefit from a visit there as well. But regardless of why, how, or any other question self-mutilation may bring up, remember that your God is able! He ALWAYS has the answer to what ails you.
"Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God." Isaiah 50:10
