Friends,
Anyone who knows me knows I generally try to eat well and stay healthy. That’s why it’s a little embarrassing to admit, but after going just a few weeks without stepping on my bathroom scale, I got a little shock this morning when I weighed in. It’s wasn’t horrible or anything, but I was quite surprised at the number I saw. I immediately opened an app I keep on my phone and re-committed to logging everything I eat or drink. That’s honestly the only way I’ve ever been able to keep my weight in a healthy range—actually paying attention to what, and how much, I consume every single day. Which brings me to my larger point: The things we allow into our lives, the media we consume, the people we hang-out with, and tons of other things, all have a drip, drip, drip type of effect on who we become. And it’s the same with our faith. Anyone who deeply desires to walk closely with the Lord has to be really purposeful about it. They have to “have their minds set” (Romans 8, above). We have to watch what we allow into our brains, what and who we allow to have influence in our lives, what and who we consider to be authoritative in answering Spiritual questions. And the input we allow has to be healthy… time in prayer, time in the Word, time in worship, time in service to others, and time in deeply authentic relationships with other believers. These are all mandatory on a regular basis. Without all of this attention, one day we wake up (or don’t wake up!) and realize we are in a place we never dreamed we’d find ourselves. As the fantastic song by, “Slow Fade” by Casting Crowns says, “It’s a slow fade, when black and white have turned to gray.”
Blessings in Christ,
Pastor Jim Kilby
