Just today I noticed two little words in one of Jesus' commands that I'd previously missed. They were the simple, yet powerful words "do not." Generally when I read something so simple, I take it for what it is. Maybe it's the state of the world today or the condition of my heart, but for years I've been reading "do not" in this command, as "it wouldn't be a good idea," or "be careful about this area of life." Oh... what was the command?
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal." Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 6:19)
On further reading, I now believe I better understand what Jesus was saying. It's OK to have stuff, and to buy and sell things, but "treasure" is something to avoid at all costs. It gets in our way when we pray, when we serve, and when we're called to give. We'd quite simply be better off without it... thus, the command "do not!"
"But, store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. FOR WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, THERE YOUR HEART WILL BE ALSO." Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 6:20-21) (Emphasis mine)
