When I went into the Air Force more than twenty years ago, I quickly learned all the little sayings and the lingo. One of the first we learned was "three hots and a cot," basically meaning that, if nothing else, the military would always give us a place to sleep and three meals a day. As it turned out, the military didn't pay too well right at first, so we were happy for the food on many occasions! During the early eighties, another thing happened in my life. There were a slew of well-known preachers (we'll leave them unnamed) who all got into huge trouble for ripping people off. Some of them led lavish lifestyles while many of the people supporting them had little or nothing left for themselves. Not being raised in the church, I quickly surmised that all preachers were out to get my money. I later learned the truth... that our churches and parishes are manned by far more genuine servants than crooks. It's just that the few bad apples get all the press. Over the years, the Lord changed my mind about this issue, too (and not just because I'm a minister). The people who serve us, be they waiters or pastors and teachers, deserve not only our respect, but a portion of what God gives us. If you've got nothing more than a kind word to give now and again, give it with reckless abandon!
"Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink of the milk? Do I say this merely from a human point of view? Doesn't the Law say the same thing? For it is written in the Law of Moses: 'Do not muzzle an oz while it is treading out the grain.' Is it about oxen that God is concerned? Surely he says this for us, doesn't he? Yes, this was written for us, because when the plowman plows and the thresher threshes, they ought to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest. If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? Of others [like soldiers or government employees] have this right of support from you, shouldn't we have it all the more? 1 Corinthians 9:7-12
