Friends,
There is an ad on YouTube I have been seeing frequently of a sports team sitting in the locker room, obviously lamenting a loss. Their coach, clearly trying to motivate them, says something along the lines of, “I want you to feel this pain so we never end up here again.”
Every time I hear it I think, man, that is SO true! I am guilty of trying to make things easy for my kids, for the ladies we work with, and even for myself. It seems like the sooner we can make the pain go away, the “better” it will be. Pain serves a purpose though. It helps us to realize healing needs to take place. It serves to slow us down and will often be a distraction until we deal with it. It makes us examine where we are and where we want to be.
Sometimes, “solving” a problem for the young people we work with is often like giving Tylenol for a broken bone if we aren’t careful. Sure, we may temporarily relieve the discomfort, but when money runs out, or the next bill is due, or the next job is lost, another fix is needed. Getting down to the real issue requires the pain to be felt, examined, and dealt with, so they never have to feel this way again.
It is always worthwhile getting down to the root of the issue. And digging out those roots is often slow and time consuming as we are changing thought patterns and behaviors. The beautiful thing about a long journey is we have time to build relationships and point to Jesus.
In Christ,
Elizabeth Kilby
