In several Old Testament Scriptures we see God openly working miracles using nature as a backdrop. Can you imagine seeing the Red Sea parted before your very eyes, or water pouring out of a rock at the simple command of Moses? In those days God seemed to be saying, "I Am God," by making a mockery of the gods people made for themselves from what they saw in nature. If you worshiped the Nile river, or the "water god" for example, and then saw God part an ocean before you, there was a good chance your idol wouldn't be looking so godly. In New Testament times, Jesus and others performed similar miracles, but more often the backdrop seemed to be personal or relational, like feeding people, healing the sick, and the like. Today, the Holy Spirit still seems to work miracles in the personal or relational areas, which leads me to believe God may have been answering a totally different question in New Testament times, and even today. In these days He seems to be saying, "I told you I Am God, and now this is how you should act and relate to the world around you. That is to say, you should accept my Son, and act as He acted." Now, whether you read it in His Word, or heard it from His Spirit, the real question is have you believed what you heard?
"Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?" Galatians 3:5
