In an effort to keep myself from carrying a lot of extra weight around, I run a few days each week. Oftentimes I'll get home from a run and my wife will ask me how my run was, or my favorite question, "Did you have a good run?" I don't know if I've ever really told her, but I don't believe there is such a thing as a "good run!" I've got some fairly expensive running shoes, several pair of nice running short, and I'm serious about running enough that I'll even run a good portion of the Air Force Marathon each year. Still, I actually don't enjoy running! I know it helps me keep the weight off, and I'm pretty sure the workout helps me stay more "mellow" in tough situations, but it's not something I hope is waiting for me in heaven or anything. Similarly, there are many things in the Christian life that I don't necessarily enjoy (at least at first), but which when I do faithfully, build me up and fortify my faith. Sometimes plain ole prayer can be difficult to fit into my busy schedule. And surely I've never been comfortable on my knees, even in my carpeted study. Sometimes just finding time to read and study God's Word is hard, and no doubt there are times when giving God a tenth of our income seems difficult. Still, these things are important... they're necessary, and just like my sometimes exhausting workout, I've just got to find a way to do them. Once I do... I'm the benefactor of my own efforts.
"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, FAITHFUL IN PRAYER." Romans 12:12 (Emphasis mine)
