I routinely get inundated with requests asking for me to pray for people. Although I make it a habit to pray for any request, I must admit, I don't always pray that difficult times will end or that trouble will miraculously stop. Instead, I often pray that the person will learn much through the trials God has allowed into his life. We're a generation that's had it easier in many ways than those who came before us. Frankly, many Christians today aren't used to dealing with real trouble. And because we've not dealt with much of it, many of us are quite immature in the Lord. Nothing happens without God's full knowledge, and while some difficulty in our lives is clearly the work of Satan, many times, God allows Satan to intersect our lives so that we'll grow in our faith. Once we've grown, then we can be used in more situations to serve our Maker. It's kind of like a mechanic who goes the extra mile to get trained on as many different kinds of cars as possible. It may be difficult for him (or her) to learn all he needs to, but he'll be much more valuable to the "big guy" (and to the customers) in the end. The next time you find difficulty in your life, don't be quick to ask for it to be removed. Instead, consider asking God to help you grow and mature through whatever comes your way.
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trails of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." James 1:2-4
