Friends,
I recently re-read Psalm 119. It’s long, and it is all about God’s law. I was surprised though because we don’t see a lot of complaining from the Psalmist. In fact, so much of the Psalm reflects gratitude for the laws of God and the instructions given. For example…
vs 1: Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the Lord.
vs 14: I have rejoiced in your laws as much as in riches.
vs 24: Your laws please me; they give me wise advice.
vs 35: Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found.
vs 92: If your instructions hadn’t sustained me with joy, I would have died in my misery.
vs 175: Let me live so I can praise you, and may your regulations help me.
It made me think about a conversation I had with a young woman who told me (basically) I was a horrible person because I expected her to become perfect instantly. Let me tell you, she wasn’t perfect (neither was I), but there had never been an expectation of perfection. She did take every chance she could to question the things we were telling her and remind us how ridiculous God must be if He wanted her to give up or change “this or that”.
What an attitude difference! And, while I do believe I represented Christ well to her, she delighted in pursuing and even seemed to rejoice in wickedness. Fortunately, God did get her heart and I am blessed to now call her a friend!
In Christ,
Elizabeth Kilby
